1. General information
The subject has an instrumental and transversal character with respect to the rest of the subjects of the master's program. Its development, eminently practical, requires the student's participation in all scheduled activities.
Objectives:
(a) Learning, in a concise and synthetic way, the conceptual and methodological aspects necessary for the development
of communication skills.
(b) Development of the necessary skills for information management, oral, written and audiovisual expression and communication in both Spanish and English.
(c) Knowledge of the socio-scientific context in which these skills are to be put into practice.
(d) Development of the ability to prepare, write and present a scientific paper.

2. Learning results
Upon completion of the subject, the student will be able to:
- Search, select and process scientific information from bibliographic and other sources.
- Select, understand and summarize scientific information on a given topic.
- Express themselves orally and in writing on scientific contents.
- Elaborate, summarise and adapt relevant graphic and audiovisual information for the communication of
scientific contents on a given topic.
- Have a practical knowledge of the mechanisms of communication within the scientific community.
-Produce and write a scientific paper.
These learning results are essential for the performance of the research or professional activity that the graduate will have to carry out in the future. A specific result will be the development of the ability to compose a scientific text in accordance with the assumptions of the selected subject and specialty. All this, within the framework of the scientific community or the corresponding professional field.
3. Syllabus
1-Search, selection and management of documentary sources.
2-Structure the information. Summarising and concept maps. Oral expression in Spanish.
3-Written expression in Spanish. Style of the scientific text: structure, lexicon, spelling, punctuation, syntax.
4-Written expression in English.
5-Oral expression in English.
6-To organize and write a scientific article. Case analysis.
7-Computer tools for image processing.
8-Computer tools for scientific drawing.
9-Computer tools for the graphic support of oral presentations.
10-Communication in the scientific community. Control mechanisms; peer review.
11-Organize and write a technical report. Case analysis.
12-Science communication in culture. Scientific dissemination. Audiovisual communication.
4. Academic activities
The subject is divided into theoretical and practical sessions of 2.5 hours. Topics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 involve the completion and presentation of short written and graphic works. Topics 2, 5 and 12 also include oral presentations.
All of this is finally integrated into a personal paper that is submitted in writing in the form of a 4-page article (2nd week of January, approximately) and presented orally (3rd week of January). Throughout the drawing up process, the student receives guidance from the teachers in order to correctly channel their work.
5. Assessment system
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT MODE:
EVALUABLE PRACTICAL WORK:
-Selection and processing of bibliographic information on a topic. List of references.
-Drawing of a conceptual map. Oral presentation (Spanish).
-Reading an article in English and writing a critical commentary (Spanish).
-Drafting of a preliminary abstract of the personal work (English).
-Presentation in English of the topic of work.
-Elaboration of a slide composed of photos and graphics using computer tools.
-Informative exhibition (Spanish).
PERSONAL WORK:
-Final written work: 4 pages, including abstract and summary, main text in Spanish or English, including at least 4 figures (maps, photos, computer graphics) and bibliographic list.
-Oral presentation (Spanish or English), 15 minutes, with graphic support.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
- Partial work: 30%
- Final written work: 50%
- Oral presentation of the final work: 20%.
MODALITY OF GLOBAL ASSESSMENT TEST (non-face-to-face students or those who wish to take it):
- PERSONAL WRITTEN WORK:
Presentation of a written work as indicated above, accompanied by a brief report (2 pages) explaining the process of choosing the work, searching for information and writing.
-ORAL PRESENTATION (Spanish or English) as indicated above.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
- Written work: 70%
- Oral presentation: 30%.
